How to send an email as blind copy (Bcc)

Blind copy — also known as Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy) — is used when you want to send an email to multiple recipients without them seeing each other's addresses. It's useful for newsletters or announcements to larger groups, and when a recipient needs to be kept in the loop without appearing visibly in the conversation.

How to do it in Outlook (Windows and Mac)

  1. Create a new email in Outlook.
  2. Click the Options tab at the top of the message window.
  3. Click Bcc in the ribbon — the field now appears under Cc.
  4. Enter the recipients' email addresses in the Bcc field.
  5. Write your message and send as normal.

The Bcc field stays visible for future emails until you turn it off again.

How to do it in Outlook on the web (outlook.office.com)

  1. Click New email.
  2. On the right side of the To field, click Bcc.
  3. Enter recipients' addresses in the new Bcc field.
  4. Write and send your email.

When should you use Bcc?

  • For newsletters or announcements to many recipients.
  • When a colleague or manager needs to be informed without being part of the thread.
  • For communication with external parties where the address list should be protected.

Note: if a Bcc recipient replies to all, the reply only goes to the sender — not to the other recipients. That's by design.
