What is cloud hosting?
Cloud hosting is a cloud solution where your servers, applications and data are operated in a professional data centre and delivered to you over the internet. Instead of owning a physical server in the server room, you rent capacity (a cloud server, storage and operations) as an ongoing service that can be scaled up and down in step with the business.
So what does that look like in practice? It spans widely: from a single hosted server, through ready-made SaaS services such as Microsoft 365, to complete environments in Microsoft Azure, where your entire infrastructure runs in the cloud.

On-premise vs. cloud is rarely a religious choice, but a trade-off:

- Uptime and redundancy: Data centres have emergency power, redundant networking and round-the-clock monitoring, far beyond what a local server room can match.
- Scalability: More capacity in minutes instead of a new server investment.
- Security and patching: Patching, backup and physical security as part of the service.
- A flexible workplace: The same access from the office, from home and from branch offices.
Drawbacks and points of attention:
- Internet dependence: No connection, no systems.
- Vendor dependence: Exit strategy and data ownership must be agreed up front.
- Ongoing cost: Operations become a recurring expense rather than a one-off investment.
- Special systems: A few older line-of-business systems still require local hardware.
What does cloud hosting cost?
Cloud hosting is billed as consumption: you pay continuously for the capacity you use, typically per server, per user or per gigabyte. The comparison with your own servers therefore has to be made honestly: a physical server looks cheap as a purchase, but the real cost includes power, cooling, space, licences, backup, monitoring, replacement every four to five years and the hours spent on operations. Cloud moves IT from an unpredictable investment (CAPEX) to a predictable operating cost (OPEX) and at the same time makes it easy to scale down again if the need falls.
Where does the data physically live?
In the cloud, data still lives in a physical place. The question is where, and who has access. For Danish businesses, data location is a genuine compliance question: GDPR requires data processing agreements and a lawful basis for transfers to countries outside the EU/EEA. The Danish Data Protection Agency provides guidance on precisely the use of cloud providers. So choose a solution where data sits in Danish or EU-based data centres, and where it is documented how the provider handles access, encryption and deletion.
