What is Microsoft Intune?

In short

Microsoft Intune is Microsoft's cloud-based tool for device management, also known as MDM (Mobile Device Management).

With Intune you can manage, secure and update your company's PCs, Macs, mobile phones and tablets from one central place in the cloud, with no on-premises servers. It is relevant for virtually every Danish business with more than a handful of devices, because manual setup and lack of oversight quickly become both expensive and insecure. The alternative is often that nobody knows which devices have access to company data.

Three key points: Intune enforces compliance policies so only secure, up-to-date devices get access to your data; with Windows Autopilot, new PCs can be set up automatically straight from the factory; and Intune works closely with Microsoft Entra ID, so access is always evaluated based on both the user and the device.

What is Microsoft Intune?

Microsoft Intune is Microsoft's cloud-based platform for device management, known in the trade as MDM (Mobile Device Management). If you ask "what is Intune" in one sentence, the answer is: one central place in the cloud where you can set up, secure, update and monitor all of your company's devices (PCs, Macs, mobile phones and tablets), wherever your employees happen to be.

For a Danish SMB, this means in practice that a new employee's PC can be ready with apps, policies and security without IT ever touching it physically, and that a lost phone can be locked or wiped in a few clicks. Intune is continuously documented by Microsoft on Microsoft Learn.

What can Intune manage?

  • PCs and Macs: Setup, Windows updates, BitLocker encryption, installed apps and local security settings.
  • Mobile phones and tablets: Separation of work data and personal data, PIN requirements, and the ability to remotely wipe company data.
  • Apps: Central deployment and updating of software, including policies for which apps may access company data.
  • Compliance policies: Rules for what a device must live up to (encryption, updates, antivirus) before it gets access to email and files. This is a core building block in a Zero Trust approach.
  • Windows Autopilot: New PCs are shipped directly from the supplier to the employee and set themselves up at first sign-in. Intune Autopilot removes manual provisioning entirely.

Intune vs. other MDM systems

There are many MDM systems on the market, but Intune's strength is its integration with the rest of the Microsoft ecosystem. Because Intune shares its identity layer with Microsoft Entra ID, access to your data can be conditioned on both who the user is and whether the device is compliant, in one unified policy. Third-party MDM can do something similar, but typically requires extra integrations, more vendors and more maintenance. If you already use Microsoft 365, Intune is almost always the natural choice, because it is often already included in your licences.

What licences does Intune require?

Intune is included in several Microsoft 365 subscriptions. The most relevant for Danish businesses are Microsoft 365 Business Premium (up to 300 users, includes Intune and Entra ID P1) as well as Microsoft 365 E3 and E5, where Intune is also included. Intune can also be bought as a standalone licence if you already have another subscription. What matters is not the name of the licence, but that you activate and configure what you are already paying for. Many businesses have Intune sitting unused in their Business Premium agreement.
