What is artificial intelligence (AI)?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is software that can solve tasks which normally require human intelligence: understanding and producing language, recognising patterns in large volumes of data, translating, summarising and suggesting. Where traditional software follows rules a developer has written, AI is trained on data, and can therefore handle tasks no one has programmed it for step by step.
The answer to "what is AI" needs no buzzwords: It is a tool that has become good at language and patterns, and that is now built into the applications most businesses already use.
How does artificial intelligence work?
In broad strokes: An AI model is trained by working through enormous amounts of examples (text, images, numbers) and adjusting itself until it can predict patterns in the material. A language model, for instance, has learned which words are likely to follow one another, across so many contexts that it can write coherent, relevant text.
The important thing to understand is that the model does not "know" anything the way a human does: It recognises patterns. That makes it strong at drafts, summarising and search, but it always needs a human to quality-check the result, especially on factual and legal questions.
Examples of AI in a Danish SMB
AI for businesses is rarely about big projects. Here are concrete examples of artificial intelligence creating value in daily work:
- Email drafts and writing: First drafts of proposals, replies and posts, which the employee then edits.
- Meeting summaries: Automatic transcription and summarising of Teams meetings with decisions and action items.
- Document search: Ask questions in plain language and get answers based on the company's own documents, instead of digging through folders.
- Customer service: Draft replies to recurring enquiries, so employees spend their time on the difficult cases.

What is generative AI?
Generative AI is the branch of artificial intelligence that creates new content (text, images, code, audio) from an instruction in plain language. It is the technology behind ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, and it is what has made AI accessible to everyone: You do not need to be able to program, only to describe what you want. Older, "analytical" AI predicts and classifies (spam filters, for example); generative AI produces.
Is AI safe to use with company data?
It depends on the tool and the setup. Two things need to be in place: The agreement with the provider must ensure that your data is not used to train models or shared onwards, and your internal access management must be in order: An AI tool that can search all documents will also find the documents that should have been locked down. Classification and access management with, for example, Microsoft Purview is therefore often the first step. If you process personal data, Datatilsynet (the Danish Data Protection Agency) also imposes requirements around legal basis and risk assessment. In other words, the foundation is ordinary good IT security.
