What is IT support?
IT support is the help users get when technology misbehaves: logins that fail, email that will not synchronise, a slow PC or a system that is down. Good IT support is not just about putting out fires. It registers every request in a ticket system, prioritises by business impact and learns from the patterns, so the same problems stop recurring.
For a business, the question is rarely whether IT support is needed, but how it should be delivered: in-house, outsourced or a combination.
1st, 2nd and 3rd level support
Most professional support organisations work in three levels:
- 1st level: First contact. Receives all requests, resolves the common cases immediately (passwords, licences, known errors) and passes the rest on with a proper error description.
- 2nd level: Technicians with deeper knowledge of your systems. Handles faults in applications, clients and configuration that 1st level cannot close.
- 3rd level: Specialists in servers, networks, security and infrastructure. Involved in complex faults, outages and changes to the underlying platform.
The levels ensure that the expensive specialists do not spend their time on printer queues, and that the user always has one place to turn.
What is the difference between IT support and IT operations?
IT support is reactive: It helps when something has gone wrong. IT operations is proactive: monitoring, updates, backup, capacity management and maintenance that prevent the problems. A provider that only sells support without operations treats symptoms; a combined operations agreement attacks the causes. In practice the two go hand in hand: The better the operations, the fewer support cases you get.
What does IT support cost?
The price depends on the model. An in-house IT employee typically costs DKK 45,000-60,000 per month including pension and tools, and that only covers one set of skills during one set of hours. Outsourced IT support is usually billed per user per month or as prepaid hours/hourly rates, and a fixed agreement for an SMB typically starts from a few hundred kroner per user per month depending on coverage and response times. What matters is what is included: Is 24/7 part of it? Is there an SLA with guaranteed response times? Are operations and security part of the package? See our pricing and agreement types for concrete numbers.
In-house vs. outsourced IT support
An in-house IT manager knows the company, but is vulnerable: holidays, illness, resignation. And no one can be a specialist in networks, security, Microsoft 365 and servers all at once. Outsourced support from an MSP gives you access to a whole team, established processes and documented response times at a predictable price. Many mid-sized businesses end up with a hybrid: an internal super user or IT coordinator working together with an external support partner on IT outsourcing.
